Walmart • Scan & Go

Scan & Go allows users to scan their items with their phones as they shop. My role in this project was to help improve the in-store shopping experience. A more consistent and user-friendly interface along with illustrations was created to make a more engaging initial contact with the app.

I was constantly working in collaboration with the UX team, QA team, and developers, as well as providing support for UX research at Toronto-GTA stores during user testings.

Besides designing the specific screens below, there was extensive work that helped align all illustrations of the Design system with the same colour palette and overall design style.

SCAN & GO APP

PROBLEM

Many users were skipping the Scan & Go feature and opting for traditional checkout instead. Research showed they often didn’t notice the feature or felt unsure about how it worked, leading to confusion and drop-off before the scanning process even began. A lack of onboarding and visual guidance was limiting awareness and trust.

MY ROLE

I led the visual design and supported UX improvements across the iOS and Android experiences. My focus was on clarifying entry points, improving how the feature was introduced, and refining the visual language to make the experience more intuitive and engaging.

OUTCOMES

We introduced a simple onboarding sequence to explain the benefits of Scan & Go, added clearer entry points in the app, and refined visual cues to build trust and guide users through their first scan. I collaborated with developers and the research team to test iterations and ensure consistency across platforms. I also supported the QA team post-handoff to ensure the final implementation matched the design intent.

IMPACT

The updates helped drive a 20% increase in app usage within the first three months post-launch, with improved discoverability and initial engagement of the Scan & Go feature.
